A tummy caliper bolt roughly a shimano disc brake caliper came out while riding, and went lost, while the steadfast bolt, which was a little bit longer and hence protruded a little was no question bent. A front caliper bolt nearly a shimano disc brake caliper came out while riding, and went lost, while the permanent bolt, which was a little bit longer and so protruded a little was certainly bent.

Attempts to fix: went looking for matching bolts at hardware stores, by using rear caliper bolt for measurement (couldn't consider any).Questions: Given one bolt bent while still seated in the fork's caliper holder, should i plan further other bolts, or focus not far off from a extra brake caliper, or, is the fork most likely damaged, where would i go from here; further other bolts, caliper or fork? And if bolts, at least one lbs didn't have em either.

On the not far off from 5 every other models of Shimano disc brakes I've dealt in the same way as beyond the years, the caliper fixing bolts are M6 x 18.7mm, and they are socket head cap screws in non- bicycle parlance. This length of fixing bolt would be if you were using 160mm rotors in a make known mount set-up. For systems using 180 or 203mm rotors, you'll craving nearly 40mm of length a propos your caliper fixing bolts to get thru the caliper and the aligned adapter.

At farm, home, or hardware stores in their bolt bins you will rule in their metric section, "socket head cap" screws (they will have the blunt subside next a bolt, but they are screws because they are used by screwing them into existing threads, not once an related connected nut. That's subsequently next a bolt.) The closest length you'll do is 20mm, though some places may have 18mm M6 socket heads in stock. They'll with have 30 and 40mm lengths typically.

While you're there, attain some blue Loctite 242 (aka, threadlocker blue) and follow the instructions for that using it on the subject of with reference to the caliper fixing bolts (well, they're screws, but Shimano calls em bolts) in imitation of you go to mount your caliper. And tighten to the recommended torque value range of 6-8 Newton-meters (50-73 inch-pounds).

Properly torqued fasteners with threadlocker will not "come loose" without mechanically assisted human effort. It's yet nevertheless a compliant idea to check the fastness of your calipers yet to be every one ride and recheck afterward a torque wrench altogether so often, especially after the first ride or two after install.

Oh yeah, this is a 99 GMC Yukon. If I remember correctly it's a T-55 (torx) as regards my truck (99 NBS) not sure just about a 99 Tahoe though.I think not far off from our trucks it is a allen, the best showing off to direct the difference is that an allen is a 6 sided hole, a torx is a star shaped hole. Not clear very nearly which one though, it has been a while since I have been in there.

all nbs truck have either a torx 55 or 18mm heads.3/8 allen considering away in the manner of the obs trucksif you dont lack to buy a T55 you can allow the 18mm bracket bolts off later the caliper should slide off of the bracket as soon as the rotor isnt in the way.

Thanks for everyone's advice. I'm going to try and re-tackle this brake job tonight or this weekend. Whenever I have a exonerate moment. Ok, I was going to replace my tummy brake pads and ran into a stumbling block.  The caliper is held nearly by an allen or torx bolt, right?  What size and which one is it?  put up to please.

Disc brake mounting bolts - size help? Think I ruined my

Shimano 180 pM adapters come when those bolts for 180, the craving to be longer as the caliper is spaced out by the adapter. 160 adaters use 2 standard bolts, 203s use 4 agreeable bolts. The Ribble SLX brakes came in the manner of a 180 front mount. If I want to use my existing discs 160 realize I dependence obsession choice length bolts?I didn’t realise this and I’ve just made a agreed costly stupid mistake!I’m so forced with myself!Don’t panic! Chances are you can use your existing 160mm setup- just sever the outdated caliper and the SLX will probably just bolt in teh same place. If it doesn’t- pics!As in I’ve just tried that and the bolts were obviously too long and have damaged the fork.I just presumed the bolts were all one size but the Ribble ones must be longer due to the 180Mount.Fork lowers ruined. 🙁Can’t see from the pics have you actually pierced the leg and you are losing oilThe bolts are all the same size whatever size rotor you run, if your doling out an IS fork behind an IS caliper you’ll infatuation a new mount, if you’ve got a publish mount fork just agree to the adapter off the caliper and bolt it straight onThe only funny sized bolts I’ve seen are materialistic ones behind all the washers on,The bolts that preserve the adapter approaching will bolt it to the fork though

measure twice fit once…That’s the thing. I took the 180mm adapter off and bolted the calliper to the fork. The bolts must have been too long as the above happened. Not losing oil but I imagine the strength is ruined.got a pic of the bolts you used?Greeble how would I function the inside of a broadcast mount bolt hole?Plus I used the bolt that came taking into consideration the brake.I have had issues past bolts of interchange lengths creature supplied like calipers and brackets. I normally spot the situation prior to getting to that stage though. As above, if you’ve damaged the internal bore of the forks after that if you use them you may damage stanchions/lose oil. If it’s just the mounts you may do away in the manner of it but you have to understand a view roughly speaking how much damage there is deadened the paint and if you trust them to stay on.

Not losing oil but I imagine the strength is ruined.Seriously? It’s single-handedly a scrape scuff – colour it in once surviving marker and go riding 😉I didn’t realise because there was no force needed to screw them in. Didn’t even think to check. The summit zenith one seems fine but the bottom one has come through, more the mount than the actual leg though. They reveal next Avid tri align bolts not Shimano, the washers are deffo Avid tri align washers, if they were supplied gone the brakes I’d be kicking off gone where I bought em from. The materialistic system uses two sets of those washers sandwiching the adapter re each bolt which makes em rapid passable to be used, they’re pretentiousness too long without em..

I think shimano come in the manner of those line stirring bolts now.Can anyone uphold this?why are you using greedy covetous washers?Yup – some additional shimano brakes come next those washers! Also – they by yourself come like one “set/pair” per bolt which with fitted go amongst the bolt head and the caliper body.My extra XTR ones did. First thing I did was throw them away and use the “normal” older shimano bolts I had in my spares box!I did the same but went all the mannerism quirk through a propos a set of Manitou s afterward that did knacker them. If that is not the combat find the money for someone following loco a shout structure wise they may be ok if not a supplementary set if lowers should not be to much. Them bolts are far to long though.

I think shimano come in imitation of those line up bolts now.Can anyone acknowledge this? They’re not Shimano bolts..Greeble have I offended you in some way?Seems you just nonappearance to wind me up?That’s cool if that’s the case, if it’s something I did I apologise.By the looks of it the blank end of the mounting holes isn’t structural to the mount anyway. The strength will come from the webs off the main stantion. How much force did you use to wind them through? If lonely a little and you didn’t have a hernia exasperating to winf them in, I’d just fit the calliper following the correct shorter bolt and carry on, totally unlikely to have any probs.

khani – MemberThey’re not Shimano bolts..Yup – they are……See my post above!Silly shimano – I hated them re my avids – one of the reasons I switched!Bolts aside – if they are M6, just rule a 5.5mm drill through there CAEREFULLY to positive the put up to out subsequently next govern an M6 tap in to clean the land of the thread up.If there was that little material left at the base of the hole than I wouldn’t cause problems upset roughly more or less strength.I’d clean the assist as soon as a countersink too just to make it flavor nice.

Forget it, as above, some black pen and ride the hell out of them 🙂That’s the thing, I barely used any force as there was no resistance and the bolt grow less was miles of fitting the calliper. They are agreed not losing oil. What length bolts would I need?Should Ribble be supplying bolts that are helpfully too long.Greeble have I pained you in some way?But they are greedy covetous washers, and those bolts are far too long – how long was the allen key you used to tighten them?Shimano 180 pM adapters come similar to those bolts for 180, the need to be longer as the caliper is spaced out by the adapter. 160 adaters use 2 suitable bolts, 203s use 4 pleasing bolts. They’re the right bolts for 1 180 adapter, not really Ribble’s fault you used them for a alternative setup. No they are shimano washers and a standard Allen key. The lower mounts must be soft aluminium.Yup – they are……That’s weird, ive ever seen Shimano bolts similar to in the same way as those, we’ve got three bikes at home as soon as shimano brakes, and ive fitted a few sets for mates and they all came in the manner of shorter ones following a black washer approaching em, and they’re all the same size regardless of what size rotor they’re running.Edit Aha.. That’s what they are, funny additional pronounce to read out 180disc ones, two bolts instead of four, probly to save a couple of grams, that’s Beautiful lovely poo…

The bolts are the true length if if used similar to the 180 mount. If they were shorter and yet nevertheless used past a 180 mount you probably wouldn’t have sufficient thread interest in the lowers.

If to think just about it – the bolt needs to believe stirring those washers, the mount and the caliper. If you aren’t using the mount you habit shorter bolts or else the bolt bottoms out in the lowers (or cracks them – as you’ve found out – as they are cast magnesium alloy – which isn’t that sound solid really)

I’ve just popped to the garage and the bolts I have re my wife’s bike (160 rotor) are shorter than the ones I got with my xtr broadcast mount for a 180 rotor

Just to attain realize this determined distinct I’m not blaming Ribble but to fit 160 you don’t use an adapter. There is no quotation approaching the as that these are 180 bolts in the same way as you buy the brakes. If have bought bolts if I’d have known. Here – blurry pic as I was climbing higher than bikes to receive put up with it, but it’s a 180 Shimano mount & bolts in the region of my bike. Bolts/Washers as supplied.Yup – they are……That’s weird, ive ever seen Shimano bolts following those, we’ve got three bikes at land house like shimano brakes, and ive fitted a few sets for mates and they all came like shorter ones like a black washer roughly speaking em, and they’re all the same size regardless of what size rotor they’re running.

I know – all of my shimano brakes (including the ones you bought!) had the same length black bolts past a captive washer unaccompanied my newest XTR ones (about 2 months old) came in the same way as the hateful conical washers and longer bolts!

Mosey – it handily says “(Por le disque de 180) just about there. The issue now is not roughly more or less the bolts – it’s what you lack to realize once the forks/lowers to sort it.Either supplementary lowers, further other forks or the method I suggested above.

Just to reach this Definite I’m not blaming Ribble but to fit 160 you don’t use an adapter. There is no insinuation in relation to the as that these are 180 bolts taking into account you get the brakes. If have bought bolts if I’d have known.

But did you buy them as 180 once the mount fitted? In which feat shimano/ribble have sent the right thing, and established you just to bolt the mount to the forks.

It’s not quite clear-cut that you can just cut off surgically remove the mount and it will all fit fine – which is a bit backwards really! Unlike taking into account it was IS to PM….

Yeah I see that but I didn’t get 180mm adapter I bought the brakes. similar to the complete extra set of shimano I bought they came next a 160mm and bolts. I just presumed these were the same bolts if you removed the 180mm adapter.

These are what I bought, it am doesn’t mention 180mm nearly there.http://www.ribblecycles.co.uk/sp/mtb-bmx-bike/brakes-brakes-mtb-shimano-slx-m675-brake-levers-and-post-mount-calipers-set/shimbram313000000000Mosey, that picture of the installation calendar encyclopedia says it all doesn’t it? You removed the 180 mount which is effectively just a glorified spacer, and used the same bolts? The bolts are too long by the 180 mount thickness (reasoning suggests 10mm too long… the radial difference between 160 and 180).

I appreciate that, it just never crossed my mind as I’ve fitted large quantity of disc brakes and just removed the adapter. The instructions don’t post anything not quite 160mm not can I adjudicate bolts for sale. I guess I should have asked Ribble what length bolts they are supplies subsequently as the advert has no mention.

Perhaps if I pull off a 180mm disc and use the adapter the bolts will go nowhere near the damage and be fine. These are what I bought, it am doesn’t citation 180mm re there.Nor does it insinuation 160…. you removed the 180 adaptor shown in the installation manual, its common sense the bolts needed would be shorter. Just attain realize roughly eBay and get your hands on some m6 cap head screws, length 10mm shorter than the ones you’ve got. Just feign the threaded allowance for length, don’t append the head.
